Every E-commerce team is chasing a better attribution model: Multi-touch, data-driven, media mix. 

The tooling has never been more sophisticated, and yet performance rarely moves.

The reason is never the model. It's that client-side pixels are losing 20-40% of conversion events before they reach any platform. Fixing this, and not seeking out better attribution models is our way to go.

The pattern we keep seeing

A DTC brand upgrades to a more sophisticated attribution model: 

  • Multi-touch attribution. 
  • Media mix mode integrated successfully. 
  • Weeks spent aligning stakeholders on which numbers to trust. 

All this to rerun the same campaigns where performance barely sees any considerable changes. .

The model wasn't the problem. When you look closer, the event capture rate is sitting at 62%. More than a third of all conversion events never made it to any platform. The attribution model, however sophisticated, was distributing credit across a minority of real touchpoints. It was producing confident, precise, and largely wrong answers.

This is one of the most consistent patterns we see across ecommerce brands in 2026: massive investment in attribution tooling on top of severely degraded event data. The reason is simple: Even the best attribution model in the world cannot recover signal that was never collected.

Why client-side pixels are losing the signal battle?

Client-side pixels, the Meta pixel, GA4 tag, TikTok pixel, all fire from inside the user's browser. That architecture made sense when browsers were neutral environments. Today, they're actively hostile to third-party tracking.

The attrition happens at multiple layers:

  • Ad blockers: uBlock Origin, Brave, and Safari's ITP block third-party scripts before they fire. Depending on your audience, this alone accounts for 15-25% of sessions.
  • iOS App Tracking Transparency: Since iOS 14.5, users who opt out of tracking generate no pixel events. On mobile-heavy verticals, opt-out rates consistently exceed 60%.
  • Browser throttling and script failures: Slow connections, JavaScript errors, and SPA race conditions cause silent event drops that never surface in your dashboard.
  • Consent gaps: In GDPR-regulated markets, users who decline tracking produce zero client-side events. For EU-facing stores, this can remove 30-60% of events before the pixel even fires.

The cumulative effect is significant. Most ecommerce brands operating without server-side collection are working with 60-80% of their actual conversion data.
The 20-40% gap isn't random noise. It's systematically representing customers who are most privacy-conscious, most technically sophisticated, and often most valuable.

What attribution models do with incomplete data

Multi-touch attribution models assign fractional credit across observed touchpoints. The key word is observed. If a significant portion of touchpoints were never captured, the model's credit distribution reflects what it was able to see, not what actually drove the purchase.

The result is a structural bias that plays out the same way every time:

  • Branded search and retargeting get over-credited: These lower-funnel touchpoints fire late in the journey, after the user has already decided to buy, and are less likely to have been blocked.
  • Prospecting video, influencer, and organic social media get under-credited: These top-of-funnel touchpoints introduced the customer first, but were far more likely to have been blocked by an ad blocker or lost to iOS restrictions.
  • Every model suffers equally: Linear, data-driven, MMM. If the input event stream has the same systematic gaps, every model produces the same structural distortion, just with different levels of confidence.

This is why brands often see little improvement when switching attribution tools. The tool wasn't the constraint. The data was.

Server-side collection: Recovering the signal before it goes upstream

Server-side event collection moves the tracking trigger off the user's browser and onto your infrastructure.
